How to Store Hemp Flowers to Keep Them Fresh
The quick answer
Store hemp flowers in a well-sealed, opaque container in a dark, cool and dry place. The three enemies of the flower are light, air and moisture — master those, and the aroma and quality will last 12 months or more.
Why storage matters at all
Terpenes — the aroma molecules that give a flower its character — are volatile. Light and heat break them down, air carries them away, and moisture invites mould. The golden rules of storage
- Glass with a seal. A jar with a rubber gasket is ideal. Plastic can give off odours, and a paper bag doesn’t seal.
- Darkness. An opaque container or a dark cupboard — UV light is the fastest destroyer of terpenes.
- Cool, but not the fridge. Room temperature or slightly below. Fridges and freezers bring condensation — and condensation brings problems.
- Don’t grind in advance. Ground flower has a huge surface area and loses its aroma much faster.

How to tell your flower is still good
- Smell: distinct and fresh = good; faint or musty = time was too strong an opponent.
- Touch: slightly springy = right; if it crumbles to dust, it’s too dry (weaker aroma, but the flower isn’t spoiled); if it feels damp and smells odd — throw it away.
- Look: a white fuzzy coating = mould. No exceptions: into the bin.
