What is CBD hash?

Hash is one of the oldest forms of cannabis in the world — written records of hemp resin go back more than a thousand years, from Persia to North Africa. Yet for many people the word “hash” still triggers one association only: an illegal drug. So let’s take it step by step.

Hemp flowers are covered in tiny resin glands called trichomes. Under magnification they look like little mushrooms with a crystal head — and it is in these heads that the plant produces cannabinoids (CBD, THC and others) as well as terpenes, which give each strain its characteristic smell. When the trichomes are separated from the plant and pressed together, you get hash: a compact, aromatic slab or ball of resin.

CBD hash is made following exactly the same principle, except that the starting material is industrial hemp — varieties bred for a high CBD content and a legally limited THC content. The result is a concentrate of everything we value in quality hemp buds:

• Density — the resin is condensed into a small piece that takes up far less space than flowers and smells far less intrusive in a closed container.
• Aroma — terpenes are at their most concentrated in the resin, so CBD hash usually smells deeper and richer than the flowers of the same strain.
• Tradition — the sieving and pressing techniques come from Morocco, Lebanon and Afghanistan and have been used almost unchanged for centuries.

How is CBD hash made?

The classic method is surprisingly simple and needs no chemistry at all. Dried flowers are gently sifted through fine screens so the trichomes separate from the plant material — the result is a fine, powdery dust called kief. The kief is then gradually pressed with the warmth of the hands: under pressure the trichome heads burst, the resin binds into a single mass, the surface slowly darkens in the air while the inside stays lighter and softer.

What does CBD hash look like?

The colour palette of hash is wide: from golden yellow and light brown through chocolate to almost black. Colour is not a grade of quality but a consequence of the strain, the fineness of the screen and the degree of pressing — lighter pieces are usually pressed more loosely and crumble more easily, darker ones are more compact with a more heavily oxidised surface.

Terpenes: why CBD hash smells the way it does

The characteristic smell of hash does not come from cannabinoids but from terpenes — aromatic molecules the plant produces in the same trichomes as CBD. Myrcene smells earthy and herbal, limonene citrusy, caryophyllene peppery and spicy, pinene resinous like a forest. Since hash is a concentrate of trichomes, it is a concentrate of these aromas too — which is why the same strain smells deeper and more layered as resin than as flowers.

• Aroma: a quality piece smells rich — earthy, spicy, resinous. A smell of hay, damp or mould is a warning sign.
• Texture: at room temperature it slowly softens and shapes between your fingers. A piece that crumbles into dust or is rock-hard is probably old or poorly made.
• Honest labelling: the producer clearly states the origin and production method. “Hand-pressed, solvent-free” means no chemical solvents were used in the process.
• Lab analysis: every batch should have an analysis confirming the cannabinoid content and compliance with the THC limit.
